Ibadan, Oyo State — A court has restrained the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from investigating the finances of the Oyo State Government, ruling that the planned probe was speculative and lacked sufficient legal basis.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the court held that the anti-graft agency failed to present convincing evidence to justify the investigation, prompting the order halting further action pending the determination of the substantive matter.
The case arose after concerns were raised over the EFCC’s planned investigation into the state’s financial activities. The court emphasized that investigative agencies must operate within the bounds of the law and avoid actions based on speculation or unsubstantiated claims.
“The proposed investigation is speculative and cannot proceed without a proper legal foundation,” the court held.
Legal analysts say the ruling reinforces the principle that anti-corruption investigations must be supported by credible evidence and due process. They added that the judgment does not prevent future investigations if fresh evidence emerges.
The EFCC is expected to study the court’s decision and determine its next legal steps, including the possibility of an appeal. Meanwhile, the substantive suit remains before the court for further proceedings.
