PORT HARCOURT — Tension gripped the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rumuolumeni, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, on Monday as suspected rival cult groups clashed in a gun battle for supremacy during the ongoing Students’ Union Government week .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the clash involved two rival factions identified as the ‘Vikings’ and ‘Clansmen’ confraternities . A viral video from the scene showed students fleeing in panic as gunshots rang out, though no casualties were reported .
CDA News Nigeria reports that rights activist Charles Jaja condemned the incident, stating that the university management had lost control of the campus and called for stronger security measures . “A university which is supposed to be a place for character building, research and learning has now become a theatre for cultism and violence. This is unacceptable,” Jaja said .
Another activist, Prince Wiro, expressed concern over repeated cult clashes, noting that such incidents erode parents’ confidence in the institution’s security architecture . He called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to invite university leadership for discussions on enhancing security .
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the clash. Spokesperson ASP Blessing Agabe stated that operatives responded promptly and restored calm . “No shots were fired by the Police, as the officers only took proactive measures necessary to contain the situation. No lives were lost,” Agabe said .
However, conflicting accounts emerged as the Students’ Union Government President insisted there was no cult clash, claiming a police officer fired a warning shot to disperse persons who entered the campus . The university management also denied the cult clash, describing the deployment as a standard security measure .
