Datti Baba-Ahmed Dumps Labour Party, Joins PRP

The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has officially resigned from the party and announced that he will join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) effective midnight.

Baba-Ahmed made the announcement on Tuesday evening during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, stating that the Labour Party is “no longer what it used to stand for” .

“Labour Party is no longer what it used to stand for,” he said, adding that internal disagreements and external interference had contributed to instability and a departure from the party’s original ideals .

His defection comes amid a deepening leadership crisis within the Labour Party, which has seen Senator Nenadi Usman emerge as the chairman of a caretaker committee, further widening factional tensions .

This represents a dramatic reversal from January 2026, when Datti reaffirmed his loyalty to the party and publicly pledged not to follow his former principal, Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). During a press conference at the time, he dismissed the ADC as a coalition of “disgruntled politicians” .

Describing the PRP as his “new destination,” Datti noted the party’s historical roots. The PRP, founded in 1978 by the late Aminu Kano, remains one of Nigeria’s oldest political movements known for its progressive ideology .
