ABUJA — Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has filed a N10 billion fundamental rights suit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, alleging denial of access to his wife and son while in custody .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that El-Rufai, through his lawyer Ubong Akpan, filed the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1852/2026 at the Federal High Court in Abuja on August 13 . He also joined the ICPC chairman and the Attorney-General of the Federation as defendants .
CDA News Nigeria reports that the former governor is seeking nine reliefs, including declarations that his fundamental rights remain enforceable despite his detention . He alleged that the ICPC prevented his wife, Aichatou Asabe, and son, Abba El-Rufai, from visiting him, particularly to provide food, medication and other necessities .
He further alleged that ICPC officers physically restrained and intimidated his wife and son on July 7, describing the incident as arbitrary interference with his spousal and filial relationships . The action, he claims, has subjected him to “humiliation, emotional trauma, anxiety and psychological distress” .
El-Rufai argued that the continued denial of family access without lawful authority violated his rights under Sections 34 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution and Articles 5 and 18 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights . He urged the court to order the respondents to grant him “unhindered and reasonable access to members of his family and counsel” .
