A commercial bus driver and his female passenger were burnt beyond recognition on Tuesday after their minibus caught fire along the Okota–Mile 2 corridor in Lagos State, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed.
Eight other passengers were rescued with injuries and evacuated to a nearby medical facility.
According to LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the incident occurred when an unidentified private vehicle reversed suddenly on the main carriageway, forcing the speeding commercial minibus to brake abruptly. The bus lost control, overturned several times, and burst into flames.
Investigations revealed that the driver had concealed a five-litre container of petrol inside the bus, which ignited instantly upon impact.
“The highly inflammable substance ignited immediately following the crash, resulting in a severe fire outbreak,” Taofiq said.
LASTMA operatives on routine patrol rescued eight passengers before the fire intensified. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LASAMBUS later extinguished the blaze and managed casualties.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, expressed deep sorrow over the “needless loss of life” and warned motorists against dangerous driving practices, particularly reversing on highways.
“Such reckless practices pose grave risks and can trigger avoidable calamities,” Giwa said.
The accident scene was secured in collaboration with the Ilasa Police Division to prevent secondary crashes and restore traffic flow.
