The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has tendered several newspaper publications before a Federal High Court as part of its evidence against former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, in the ongoing trial surrounding the controversial naira redesign policy.
The publications, presented by the prosecution during proceedings, are believed to contain reports and public statements linked to the implementation of the naira redesign exercise, which triggered a severe cash scarcity across Nigeria in late 2022 and early 2023, causing widespread hardship among millions of Nigerians.
The EFCC prosecutors argued that the tendered exhibits form a critical part of the chain of evidence establishing the former CBN governor’s culpability in the charges preferred against him by the Commission.
Defence counsel, however, raised objections to the admissibility of some of the publications, urging the court to discountenance them on grounds of relevance and authenticity.
The presiding judge reserved ruling on the objections and adjourned the matter to allow both parties to file further processes.
Emefiele, who served as CBN Governor from 2014 to 2023, has pleaded not guilty to charges bordering on abuse of office and financial misconduct.
