El-Zakzaky Declares Shiites ‘Cannot be Frightened by Guns’ Ahead of Zaria Massacre Anniversary

The leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, has declared that his followers “cannot be frightened by guns,” in a strong statement ahead of the 10th anniversary of the 2015 Zaria clash.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, El-Zakzaky described the IMN as “a power to be reckoned with,” praising the commitment of its members who have “faced” state security forces. He condemned both past and present governments for failing to address the massacre and worsening insecurity.

The 2015 incident, which began when IMN members blocked the convoy of then Army Chief Tukur Buratai, led to a military operation that resulted in hundreds of deaths according to human rights groups. El-Zakzaky and his wife were detained for years before being acquitted in 2021.

When asked about the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s role, El-Zakzaky stated, “He has passed away. We will meet on the day of judgement.”
