The Senate Public Accounts Committee has ordered the immediate arrest of the former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, over an alleged N210 trillion revenue discrepancy.
The order followed Kyari’s persistent refusal to honour legislative summons to appear before the committee investigating the financial activities of the national oil firm. Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a member of the committee, demanded that Kyari be produced “dead or alive”.
“Bring Mele Kyari here, dead or alive. He must account for his actions,” Oshiomhole declared during a heated session on Wednesday.
The committee had earlier invited Kyari to provide explanations regarding the alleged missing funds, but he failed to appear, citing health challenges and claims of being hospitalised abroad. Lawmakers rejected his excuses, describing them as deliberate attempts to frustrate the probe.
The committee also engaged in a tense exchange with a former NNPC Chief Financial Officer, Dr. Umar Ajiya, with Oshiomhole famously declaring that “NNPC is a house of thieves”.
The Senate has directed security agencies to produce Kyari before the committee at its next sitting.
