A prominent Enugu State political stakeholder, Onoh, has openly faulted the one-term promise made by PDP governorship candidate Professor Bart Nnaji, backing instead the principle of zoning and throwing strong support behind Governor Peter Mbah’s governance record ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Onoh argued that Nnaji’s declaration to serve only one term if elected governor, rather than being seen as a mark of selflessness, raises fundamental questions about political strategy, party structure, and the sustainability of governance in Enugu State.
He warned that a one-term commitment could create a lame duck administration from day one — weakening the governor’s political authority, undermining long-term policy planning, and emboldening opposition forces who would immediately begin positioning for the next electoral cycle rather than allowing the government to govern effectively.
On the contentious issue of zoning, Onoh firmly backed the principle as a critical mechanism for ensuring equity, inclusion, and balanced political representation across Enugu State’s senatorial zones — arguing that abandoning zoning arrangements would breed resentment, fuel instability, and damage the unity of the state’s political class.
The stakeholder also seized the opportunity to defend Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, praising what he described as a visible and commendable development record that deserves recognition and continuity rather than premature replacement.
Onoh’s remarks are expected to further intensify the already heated political debate in Enugu State, where Nnaji’s emergence as the PDP flagbearer has divided opinion among party stalwarts, traditional rulers, and grassroots supporters.
Political analysts say the criticism from Onoh reflects a deeper fault line within Enugu’s political establishment over the direction of the state’s leadership ahead of 2027.
Governor Mbah’s camp and Nnaji’s campaign organisation are yet to formally respond to Onoh’s latest remarks at the time of filing this report.
