There are growing concerns that the 2027 general elections could be postponed if the National Assembly fails to pass the amended Electoral Act within the next three weeks.
The House of Representatives stepped down consideration of the bill last Thursday due to insufficient copies for lawmakers, while the Senate appointed a seven-member committee to harmonize positions and report by Monday, February 3.
With INEC required by current law to issue election notices 360 days before polling day, the deadline for the 2027 elections is fast approaching. If the amended law is not passed and assented to promptly, the commission may be forced to proceed with the 2022 Act or face postponement.
Proposed key reforms—including one-day elections, mandatory electronic transmission of results, early voting, and diaspora voting—could be delayed until 2031 if the bill is not finalized soon.
The opposition ADC has accused the ruling APC of deliberately stalling the bill to undermine electoral integrity.
