Nigerian Singer Dies After Snake Bite Amid Anti-Venom Scarcity

Fast-rising Abuja-based singer, Ifunanya Nwangene, popularly known as Nanyah, has died after being bitten by a snake at her residence on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The 20-year-old vocalist, a soprano in the Amemuso Choir, initially visited a hospital in Lugbe but was turned away due to lack of anti-venom. She then traveled to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, where only one dose of anti-venom was available.

Despite receiving the first dose, a second was urgently needed. While her music director rushed to procure it from a nearby pharmacy, Nwangene passed away before his return.

Her choir and music community have expressed deep grief, describing her as a rising star with immense talent, tragically cut short by inadequate emergency medical supplies.
