The global football governing body, FIFA, has confirmed that Iran will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and play its matches in the United States, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.
FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, made this known while addressing concerns surrounding Iran’s participation amid strained relations with the United States. He emphasized that there is no alternative arrangement, stating clearly that there is “no Plan B, C, or D,” reaffirming FIFA’s commitment to the original tournament structure.
Iran has already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Speculation had earlier emerged that Iran might request a change of venue for its matches due to diplomatic tensions, but FIFA has dismissed such possibilities.
The decision underscores FIFA’s long-standing principle of separating sports from politics, insisting that football should serve as a unifying force even in times of global uncertainty. Infantino also assured that necessary measures would be taken to guarantee the safety and smooth participation of all teams.
The confirmation is expected to put an end to uncertainty surrounding Iran’s involvement, as fans worldwide look forward to a tournament that promises to be historic in scale and participation.
