BARCELONA – Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has publicly defended his teenage winger, Lamine Yamal, promising to “protect” the 18-year-old from recent criticism.
Yamal faced scrutiny after a subdued performance in the Clasico defeat to Real Madrid, compounded by pre-match comments that upset rival fans and media.
“We are very honest together,” Flick stated in a press conference. “I will always protect him and support him. He’s a fantastic player, fantastic guy, he’s very young and we will go on this way.”
The German coach confirmed Yamal is managing a groin injury but is on a “good evolution.”
In a boost for the team, Flick also announced the return of Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo from injury ahead of Barcelona’s La Liga match against Elche.
