Voters across Ekiti State are heading to the polls today, Saturday, June 20, 2026, to elect a governor for a four-year term in a keenly contested off-cycle governorship election.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, 97.1 per cent of registered voters have collected their Permanent Voter Cards, with 1,028,929 out of 1,059,360 registered voters eligible to cast ballots. Only 30,431 PVCs remain unclaimed.
The contest features 16 candidates, though analysts anticipate a three-way battle among incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress, Oluwole Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Oluwadare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress.
Other contenders include Opeyemi Falegan (Accord), Oyebanji Olajuyin (Labour Party), Blessing Abegunde (NNPP), Bidemi Awogbemi (APGA), and several others from smaller parties.
Security agencies have deployed personnel across the 16 local government areas to ensure peaceful conduct, while INEC officials commenced distribution of sensitive materials to polling units early Saturday morning.
The election is viewed as a critical test of the APC’s hold in the South-West and a bellwether for the ruling party’s performance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
