Hamas said on Saturday that it remains ready to move forward with the latest stage of a United States-backed Gaza peace plan, while urging Washington to press Israel, which insists it has not agreed to that part of the deal.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that Hamas informed US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace that it stands by the current stage of the plan, under which the group would hand over its weapons to a newly formed Palestinian governing committee overseeing the war-affected territory.
“Hamas and other factions have confirmed to mediators their readiness to begin implementing the agreement and move to the second phase, provided it receives Israeli approval and that Israel begins implementing the agreement,” a Hamas official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The official added that the group is pushing Washington to intervene directly with Israel to ensure compliance. “Hamas is urging the US administration to exert pressure on Israel to compel it to abide by the agreement and move to the second phase,” the official said.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the disarmament proposal forms the next stage of the broader peace framework Trump unveiled last year to end the war in Gaza, following a ceasefire that took effect in October 2025. Under the plan, Hamas and other armed factions would hand over weapons, including heavy weaponry, to a National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, while Israeli forces carry out a phased withdrawal from parts of the territory still under their control.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces a difficult reelection contest in October alongside strong opposition from his right-wing base over the Gaza agreement, said earlier in the week that Israel had not agreed to the “draft” plan presented by the Board of Peace. Netanyahu reportedly met with the Board’s high representative for Gaza, Nickolay Mladenov, and maintained that Israel would only begin withdrawing after Hamas completes full disarmament, a position that appears to diverge from the roadmap’s original sequencing. Israel’s military has also stated it intends to continue operations against Hamas.
Despite the standoff, CDA News Nigeria gathered that Israeli military activity in Gaza appears to have eased somewhat in recent days. On Saturday, the Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis reported that three people were injured by Israeli army gunfire. According to Gaza’s health ministry, which operates under Hamas authority and whose figures the United Nations considers reliable, Israeli operations in the territory have killed 1,257 Palestinians since the October ceasefire, while Israel’s military has recorded five deaths within its ranks over the same period.
The disagreement over sequencing, specifically whether Israeli withdrawal or Hamas disarmament should come first, remains the central obstacle to advancing the plan’s second phase, even as both Trump and mediating countries, including Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, continue pushing for its full implementation.
