LAGOS, NIGERIA – Indications have emerged that Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi); and Senator Tokunbo Abiru may be positioned as consensus governorship candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, Ogun, and other Southwest states ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sources close to the party’s leadership revealed that ongoing consultations among APC stakeholders are centered on forging a consensus arrangement to reduce the cost of primaries and maintain unity across the region. Hamzat is widely speculated to be the preferred successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in Lagos, while Senator Adeola (Yayi) is being tipped to fly the party’s flag in Ogun State, where his political structure and grassroots appeal have positioned him as a frontrunner.
Senator Tokunbo Abiru is also being considered in the mix for strategic alignment within the Lagos political architecture, according to party insiders.
The consensus talks are being spearheaded by influential party leaders who are keen to avoid divisive primaries that could weaken the APC’s stronghold in the Southwest—a region considered the party’s political bastion.
Neither the APC national leadership nor the respective state chapters have officially confirmed the arrangements. Political analysts note that while consensus remains the preferred option, other aspirants may still contest if agreements are not reached.
