An Abia State High Court has sentenced two men convicted of child defilement to 40 years’ imprisonment, reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to protecting children’s rights and imposing stiff penalties for sexual offences.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the court found the defendants guilty after considering the evidence presented during the trial. The judge held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and subsequently sentenced the convicts to 40 years in prison.
The court emphasized the need to protect children from sexual abuse, describing such crimes as grave violations of human dignity and fundamental rights. It also noted that severe punishment would serve as a deterrent to others who may contemplate similar offences.
The prosecution welcomed the judgment, describing it as a victory for justice and the protection of vulnerable members of society. Stakeholders have also commended the verdict, urging victims and their families to continue reporting cases of abuse to law enforcement agencies.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the judgment comes amid ongoing efforts by authorities and child rights advocates to combat sexual violence against minors and ensure offenders are held accountable under the law.
