Ikwuano, Abia State —Comrade Okechukwu Matthew, the Labour Party Youth Leader in the Ikwuano Local Government Area, has denied any involvement in the revenue-collection controversy with Executive Mayor Dr. Anthony Nwaubani. He said he was not part of any revenue collection or financial transactions mentioned by a former revenue agent.
Matthew told CDA News Nigeria that he got involved to push for more youth participation in revenue opportunities, after hearing complaints from young people looking for jobs and stipends. He said he met the former revenue collector just once to learn about the revenue system, and believes any financial disputes should be settled by those directly involved.
Regarding the controversy surrounding the electrification of the Isugwu and Obeachara communities, Matthew alleged that disagreements arose after discussions about funding the project. According to him, he objected to commissioning the project before a community inspection confirmed that the installation had been properly completed.
“I have no involvement in their transactions or agreements. Anyone with a dispute should resolve it directly with the person they dealt with,” Matthew said.
Matthew also challenged the Mayor to provide evidence supporting any allegation that he influenced the contractor or sought financial benefit from the electricity project, stating that he reserves the right to pursue legal action if such claims cannot be substantiated.
The Executive Mayor’s administration has previously denied allegations made against it, describing them as false and politically motivated. CDA News Nigeria notes that the claims and counterclaims remain disputed, and none has been established by a court of law. Relevant authorities may investigate the issues if necessary.
