The Mayor of Ikwuano Local Government Area, Hon. Anthony Nzeribe Nwaubani, Ph.D., FCA, FCIB, on Saturday hosted Labour Party stakeholders and chieftains at his office to address recent controversies surrounding revenue collection, the Obeachara electricity project, and other issues generating public discussion within the council.
Addressing the gathering, the Mayor described the widely circulated videos and interviews alleging extortion as a coordinated blackmail campaign designed to tarnish his image over personal grievances, naming Kelvin Orji of “Ikwuano TV Global” and Labour Party youth leader, Okey Matthew, as key actors.
In a dramatic twist, revenue agent Uchenna Onyekwe, who was earlier cited in reports as the source of extortion allegations, personally denied ever making such claims, insisting his grievance was solely with the replaced agent, Ihechi Igbokwe, whom he accused of working against non-Labour Party youths.
The Mayor explained that revenue reforms harmonised at the state and local government levels empowered the Revenue Coordinator to replace agents who fail to reflect integrity, noting that Igbokwe had persistently underperformed since 2024.
On the Isiugwu and Obeachara electricity project, Nwaubani revealed he personally initiated the rehabilitation of an abandoned transformer, but rejected an inflated cost demand from community engineers, whose account details reportedly did not match their business records. He confirmed the transformer has now been fully rehabilitated, with cables and poles from Isiugwu to Umuosoko already repaired ahead of connection.
Youth leaders present at the meeting distanced themselves from the unlawful takeover of the revenue point, while stakeholders unanimously called for unity, urging an end to what they described as the “pull him down syndrome” plaguing Ikwuano.
The Mayor thanked the stakeholders for honouring the short-notice invitation and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency and inclusive governance.
