The Imo State Police Command has ordered an investigation into a viral video that allegedly shows a police traffic warden and two State Civil Guard Corps personnel harassing and extorting a motorist in Owerri.
CDA News Nigeria reports that, according to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Okoye Henry, the motorist was allegedly driving without a driver’s licence on October 8, 2026, when the incident occurred.
The police said the command strongly condemns the conduct shown in the video, calling it unacceptable and contrary to the discipline and integrity expected of law enforcement personnel.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the officer in the video has been identified as Inspector Chinewe Ejiogu of the Shell Camp Divisional Police Headquarters. The two Civil Guard personnel were named as Kelechi Nzediagwu and Onyedikachi Chibuike. The police said the two civil guard personnel are in detention at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
The Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, directed the command’s Complaint Response Unit to investigate the matter. He urged the affected motorist to report to the unit and provide information to assist the probe. The police said appropriate disciplinary action will follow once it ends.
The command said no traffic violation justifies extortion, harassment or abuse of office, and that all personnel have been warned to treat the public with respect. It also urged residents to report misconduct through the appropriate channels.
The allegations have not been proven, and the personnel have not been tried. The statement did not say where Inspector Ejiogu is being held or whether the amount allegedly demanded has been established.
CDA News Nigeria will update this story as more information emerges.
