The only female aspirant contesting for the House of Representatives seat in Jigawa State, Barrister Firdausi Sunusi Umar, has withdrawn from the race ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Firdausi, who was seeking to represent Ringim and Taura Federal Constituency, announced her withdrawal on Friday, citing the need for party unity and collective progress.
She also declared support for another aspirant within her party, saying her decision was taken after consultations with political stakeholders and supporters.
Her exit from the contest has sparked reactions across political circles in Jigawa, with many describing her participation as a bold step for women’s inclusion in politics in northern Nigeria.
Political observers say the development highlights the challenges female politicians continue to face in elective politics, particularly in conservative regions where women’s representation remains low.
Despite stepping down, supporters say Firdausi’s involvement in the race has inspired many young women to participate actively in leadership and governance.
