ABUJA, Nigeria – Former President Goodluck Jonathan met with President Bola Tinubu on Saturday, following his evacuation from Guinea-Bissau where a military takeover disrupted his election monitoring mission for the West African Elders Forum.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed the meeting at the Presidential Villa, noting concerns about Jonathan’s safety had mounted after soldiers announced they had taken over the government in Guinea-Bissau. The former president had been leading the election observation mission for last Sunday’s presidential and legislative elections when the political crisis unfolded.
Jonathan returned to Nigeria on Thursday evening via an Ivorian government aircraft, with videos showing his arrival at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport where he was received by supporters and officials. The meeting with President Tinubu marks the former leader’s first official engagement since his safe return from the politically volatile West African nation.
