Kalu Demands Accountability from SEDC as Senate Probes N16.6bn Disbursement, Questions N153m Monthly Rent

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC), Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has demanded full accountability from the Commission’s leadership over the management of public funds, following the release of N16.6 billion to the agency.

Kalu spoke on Tuesday during an interactive oversight session between the Committee and SEDC management led by its Managing Director, Hon. Mark Okoye. He stressed that accountability and prudent management of public resources remain non-negotiable.

During the session, the former Abia State governor raised concerns over reports that the Commission is allegedly paying N153 million monthly as rent for a small office space in Abuja despite receiving substantial funding.

“We can get records from anywhere they are kept. I can personally obtain relevant records directly from the Central Bank of Nigeria from my office,” Kalu reportedly stated.

He expressed disappointment over the handling of the Commission’s finances, given the Managing Director’s background in financial management.

The Committee directed the SEDC to submit detailed expenditure records at its next sitting. In response, the SEDC management assured lawmakers that all requested documents would be made available.
