UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE — Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has signaled his interest in contesting the 2027 governorship election in Abia State, responding to growing calls from supporters and political associates urging him to join the race.
The development sets the stage for a potential high-stakes political showdown with incumbent Governor Alex Chioma Otti, who is widely expected to seek re-election on the platform of the Labour Party.
Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency and serves as the highest-ranking political officeholder from the South-East in the current administration, is yet to make a formal declaration. However, sources close to the Deputy Speaker confirm that he is seriously considering the proposition following sustained pressure from stakeholders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and beyond.
The Deputy Speaker’s rising national profile, coupled with his perceived influence in attracting federal projects to the state, has positioned him as a formidable contender. Supporters argue that his candidacy would unify the APC and present a credible alternative to Governor Otti’s administration.
Political analysts suggest that a Kalu candidacy could significantly alter the political calculations in Abia State, potentially drawing defections from other parties and reshaping alliances ahead of the polls.
Neither Kalu nor Governor Otti’s camp has issued an official statement regarding the emerging contest. However, party chieftains on both sides are said to be intensifying grassroots mobilization in anticipation of a fiercely contested election.
