Kano Gov’s Planned Defection to APC Stalls Amid Pressure, Demands

The planned defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has been stalled, creating uncertainty in the state’s political landscape.

Initially scheduled for early January and later postponed to January 12, the move has been delayed as the governor continues consultations amid pressure from his political godfather, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Sources indicate that Governor Yusuf has demanded an automatic ticket for the 2027 gubernatorial election as a condition for joining the APC—a request the party’s leadership has yet to approve pending President Bola Tinubu’s return.

Internal splits within the NNPP and threats from Kwankwaso loyalists to resign if the governor defects have further complicated the situation.

Former NNPP Chairman in Kano, Hashimu Dungurawa, has publicly urged the governor to remain in the party, warning that his re-election would be more certain within the NNPP than in the APC.
