ABUJA – Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will appeal the life imprisonment sentence handed down by the Federal High Court in Abuja, while alleging systematic judicial and executive fraud in his case.
The decision to challenge Thursday’s judgment was confirmed by Kanu’s legal team, who described the sentence as fundamentally flawed. In an open letter, Kanu detailed what he termed “serial executive and judicial fraud” since his extraordinary rendition in 2021.
Kanu specifically referenced multiple court judgments that he claims were disregarded, including a 2017 Federal High Court ruling that IPOB was not an unlawful organization, and a 2022 court declaration that his rendition from Kenya was unconstitutional.
The IPOB leader alleged an “unholy and fraudulent alliance” between the government and judiciary to deny him his rights, citing the government’s failure to obey court orders for his release and compensation.
Despite the Supreme Court’s December 2023 decision that his bail should not have been revoked, Kanu noted that the Federal High Court continued his detention in what he characterized as a violation of constitutional provisions.
