Organised labour has opposed the Federal Government’s proposed Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement for Unity Schools, calling on President Bola Tinubu to halt any plan that could lead to the sale or commercialisation of the schools.
CDA News Nigeria reports that labour leaders expressed concern that introducing a PPP model could undermine the original purpose of Unity Schools, which was established to promote national unity and provide quality education to Nigerians from diverse backgrounds.
According to the labour movement, public education should remain under government ownership and management, warning that privatisation could make access to quality education more difficult for children from low-income families.
The union urged the Federal Government to focus on adequately funding, rehabilitating, and equipping Unity Schools instead of considering policies that may alter their public status.
Labour also appealed to President Tinubu to intervene and ensure that the schools remain public institutions dedicated to national integration and educational excellence.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the proposed PPP initiative has generated mixed reactions among stakeholders, with supporters arguing it could improve infrastructure and efficiency, while critics fear it may eventually pave the way for privatisation.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government had not issued a fresh response to the concerns raised by organised labour.
