The Lagos State House of Assembly has thrown its weight behind the establishment of state police, endorsing greater control of police services by state governments as part of efforts to strengthen security across Nigeria.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the lawmakers argued that decentralising policing would improve intelligence gathering, enhance community policing, and enable quicker responses to security threats.
According to the Assembly, state-controlled police services would allow security agencies to better understand local communities and effectively address crimes based on the peculiar security challenges of each state.
The lawmakers maintained that the current security realities require a more decentralised policing structure capable of responding promptly to emerging threats, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes.
Supporters of the proposal also stressed the need for constitutional safeguards to ensure professionalism and accountability, and to prevent the misuse of state police by political office holders.
