The National Assembly has passed the State Police Bill, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional reform process and reigniting debate over the decentralisation of policing.
The proposed legislation seeks to establish state-controlled police forces alongside the Nigeria Police Force, with supporters arguing that it will improve security by allowing states to respond more effectively to local crime and insecurity.
The development has, however, divided public opinion. Advocates of state policing believe it will strengthen intelligence gathering, enhance community policing, and tackle rising insecurity across the country.
Opponents, on the other hand, have expressed concerns that state police could be abused by state governments for political purposes, particularly during elections and periods of political tension. They have called for strong constitutional safeguards to ensure professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights.
The bill is regarded as one of the most far-reaching security reforms in Nigeria’s democratic history. Attention now shifts to the next stages of the constitutional amendment process before the proposal can become law.
