N’Assembly Collates State Police Reports

The National Assembly has commenced the collation of reports from 30 State Houses of Assembly regarding the proposed constitutional amendment to establish state police across the country.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the collation process follows the transmission of the amendment bill to the 36 state legislatures for concurrence, in line with Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution. The law requires approval from at least 24 states (two-thirds) to alter the constitution and create a decentralised policing system.

Recent developments have seen a growing number of states, including Kaduna and others, voting overwhelmingly in favour of the amendment. Lawmakers supporting the move argue that state police will significantly improve local intelligence gathering, community policing, and rapid response to security threats. However, critics have raised concerns over potential abuse by state governors.

Once the collation is finalized and the two-thirds threshold is confirmed, the National Assembly will harmonize the resolutions and transmit the bill to President Bola Tinubu for assent. CDA News Nigeria will continue to monitor the legislative process and provide updates as the state police framework advances.
