A sweeping disciplinary action by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Dr. Tanimu Turaki, dubbed the ‘broom action,’ has thrown the opposition party into deeper turmoil and created a significant dilemma for the electoral commission, INEC.
The move, which saw the suspension of key figures including former Rivers State Governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his allies, is Turaki’s most assertive step to consolidate control and expel members deemed loyal to a rival faction. However, the suspended members have rejected the action, declaring Turaki’s leadership illegitimate and vowing to challenge it legally.
This deepening schism now presents a critical test for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which must decide which faction’s directives to recognize for party nominations and governance ahead of future elections.
