ABUJA – Nigeria’s newly confirmed electoral chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has promised to deliver elections so credible that defeated candidates will willingly congratulate the winners.
Amupitan made the declaration on Tuesday after being screened and confirmed by the Senate.
“Our ultimate goal is to make elections so credible that even the loser will be able to congratulate the winner in good faith,” he stated.
The new INEC chairman outlined key plans, including an audit of the problematic IReV portal, a new whistleblower policy to report misconduct, and improved election logistics, potentially using drones to secure materials.
He takes over from Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who served for 10 years.
In a related development, the Senate postponed the consideration of a bill to amend the 2022 Electoral Act, which proposed moving the 2027 presidential election to November 2026.
