Rt. Hon. Sam Onuigbo, the legislator widely recognized as the architect of Nigeria’s Climate Change Act 2021, is set to bring the nation’s climate resilience message to the global stage as part of the Nigerian delegation to the COP30 summit in Belém, Brazil.
Onuigbo’s attendance underscores Nigeria’s continued commitment to climate action. His pivotal role in sponsoring the landmark 2021 Act, which established a national framework for emissions reduction and carbon management, has positioned him as a key voice in the country’s environmental policy.
The Nigerian delegation, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, will also include the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, and other officials. This collective presence aims to showcase Nigeria’s strengthened climate governance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
President Tinubu has recently reinforced the Climate Change Act by approving the National Carbon Market Framework and operationalizing the Climate Change Fund, actions that align with the legislative blueprint championed by Onuigbo.
In a pre-COP30 interview, Onuigbo highlighted the urgency of climate action, pointing to severe erosion in Nigerian communities and the need for decisive intervention. His participation in the summit from November 10-21, 2025, is seen as a move to secure international partnerships and affirm Nigeria’s dedication to a sustainable future.
