A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ladipo Johnson, has expressed confidence that the party will win the Kano State governorship election in 2027, whether Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains in the party or defects to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Johnson pointed to the NNPP’s past electoral performance in Kano, where it secured victory in 2023 without incumbency advantage at the grassroots level.
He dismissed the impact of defection rumours surrounding Governor Yusuf, who recently met with President Bola Tinubu—a move that has fueled speculation about a possible switch to the APC.
Johnson recalled that the NNPP won Kano in 2023 “without having anyone in situ, any officials in situ, no councillors, nothing,” and insisted the party’s grassroots appeal remains strong.
Governor Yusuf’s spokesperson has denied any political motive behind the visit to Tinubu, stating it was focused on security concerns following a recent tragic killing in the state.
