Tension is running high at the Rivers State College of Health Science and Management Technology today, Sunday, May 4, 2026, as hostel residents have taken to the streets in a passionate and determined protest over what they describe as shockingly deplorable living conditions that have persisted for several months without any intervention from school management.
The aggrieved students, who came out in large numbers, blocked the school gate and voiced their frustration over the complete absence of basic amenities — particularly water and electricity — in their hostel facilities, which they say have been non-functional for months.
In one of the most alarming revelations from the protest, students disclosed that they are forced to leave the school premises and trek to the Ikwerre Express Road to fetch water for their daily needs — a situation they described as not only degrading but deeply dangerous for young health science students.
The protesters expressed bitter disappointment over the high hostel accommodation fees they continue to pay, accusing the college’s Provost and management of gross mismanagement of funds meant to maintain and service hostel facilities.
“We are paying heavily for accommodation and getting nothing in return. No water, no electricity — this is unacceptable,” one visibly angry student told our correspondent on the scene.
The students are now directing urgent appeals to Rivers State Governor, Sir Sim Fubara, the State Commissioner for Education, and the Ministry of Health to immediately step in and compel the college management to restore basic services and address the welfare crisis facing hostel residents.
As of press time, neither the college management nor the Rivers State Government had issued any official response to the students’ demands.
