Ibrahim Abdulkarim, a political associate of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, has claimed that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has agreed to serve as Obi’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 presidential election.
Abdulkarim made the revelation during an interview with Trust TV, stating categorically that the two political heavyweights have met on multiple occasions and reached an agreement. He further disclosed that plans are underway for a joint summit between the Obidient movement and the Kwankwasiyya group to formalize the alliance.
The claim comes shortly after Kwankwaso defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), fueling speculation about a possible merger of opposition forces. Both Obi and Kwankwaso are now members of the ADC, which has become a rallying point for opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections.
Habib Mai-Lemo, spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, responded to the development by asserting that a joint Obi-Kwankwaso ticket would pose a significant challenge to President Bola Tinubu’s reelection bid, describing their followership as “organic” and capable of influencing electoral outcomes.
However, neither Obi nor Kwankwaso has officially confirmed the agreement. Earlier denials from both camps have also surfaced, including a statement from Obi’s spokesperson Yunusa Tanko, who maintained that Obi would not serve as anyone’s running mate. As the 2027 elections draw closer, the political landscape remains fluid, with opposition leaders yet to finalize any formal coalition.
