The Ondo State Government has announced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okadas, on some routes in Akure, the state capital, as part of efforts to improve traffic management.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Transport, Olumuyiwa Ogunyemi, disclosed this to journalists in Akure on Tuesday, stating that the government was ready to prosecute motorists, okada riders and other road users who violated traffic regulations, particularly traffic light signals.
According to Ogunyemi, riders approaching from the Police Officers’ Mess route will be restricted to approved locations, while those coming through the First Bank area in Alagbaka will terminate operations around the Teaching Service Commission axis, as the government intensifies enforcement following ongoing public sensitisation campaigns tied to new infrastructure projects, including the ongoing flyover construction.
He warned that commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators who ignore traffic signals will face arrest and prosecution, stressing that it was “no longer business as usual” for road users in the state capital.
Ogunyemi added that additional traffic management facilities, including zebra crossings and speed limit signs, would be installed around schools and other sensitive locations to boost road safety, while appealing to residents to cooperate with the government’s modernisation efforts.
