…Violence Erupts Over Sanitation Enforcement at Chorbe Market in Jos North
One person has been feared killed, and several vehicles smashed following a violent clash between operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and traders at Chorbe Market in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the incident occurred on Thursday during an attempt to enforce a weekly sanitation exercise at the market.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the clash was triggered when NSCDC operatives, invited by officials of the market traders’ association, attempted to compel roadside traders to close their shops and participate in the exercise. The traders resisted, arguing that their businesses were located outside the main market and that they were not members of the association responsible for the sanitation directive.
“Our shops are along the road, not inside the market. We told them we are not part of their sanitation exercise, but they insisted we must close,” one trader, Malam Sani Musa, said.
Another trader, Grace John, alleged that the situation escalated when armed operatives began harassing traders. “They came with guns and started threatening us. When some of the traders refused, they started shooting. One person was shot, and, in the process, some hoodlums smashed windscreens of vehicles parked along the road”.
The injured trader was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. However, reports on the casualty figure varied, with some sources stating the victim was killed while others said the person was injured.
Several vehicles parked along the roadside were damaged during the unrest. A vehicle owner, Ibrahim Yusuf, said his car was smashed while he briefly left it to buy something. “Who will pay for this now?” he asked.
The violence triggered panic in surrounding communities, with streets around the market becoming deserted as residents fled into their homes and locked their doors. The unrest spread to adjoining areas including Apata, Alikazaure, Katako, and Masalachi, extending towards Bauchi Road — areas described as hotspots of frequent clashes in Jos North.
The Plateau State NSCDC Command spokesperson, ASP NR Rimvyok, confirmed the incident and said it is being investigated. Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Command spokesman, Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
