ABUJA – Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is grappling with a severe internal crisis as its Board of Trustees (BoT) has declared neutrality and initiated reconciliation efforts, while a faction has officially cancelled the party’s upcoming national convention.
At the 83rd BoT meeting in Abuja, Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara announced the board would not align with any faction, stating, “As the conscience of the party, the Board of Trustees cannot and will not take sides. Our sacred duty is to safeguard the integrity of the PDP.”
The BoT established a high-powered reconciliation committee with a one-week deadline to resolve differences before the scheduled November 15-16 convention in Ibadan. The committee includes prominent members such as Chief Mike Oghiadomhe and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
Meanwhile, the faction led by Acting National Chairman Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammed announced the suspension of the convention, citing a Federal High Court judgment and the need to uphold the rule of law. “Having filed an appeal and in line with our responsibility to uphold the rule of law, the PDP hereby suspends and cancels the proposed Ibadan national convention,” Muhammed stated.
This development creates uncertainty around the party’s leadership transition and comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s main opposition party.
