The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing further depletion as stakeholders in Zamfara State have reportedly urged Governor Dauda Lawal to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) .
According to a statement by APC stalwart Iran Muhammad on Saturday, Governor Lawal convened an emergency meeting with his cabinet and PDP leaders to deliberate on the state’s political direction, where the option of joining the APC was recommended .
“The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, PhD, held an emergency meeting with his cabinet and PDP stakeholders late last night to discuss the way forward. During the meeting, they recommended that he join the APC,” Muhammad claimed in a post on X .
The reported move comes amid a wave of defections rocking the PDP. Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri formally dumped the party for the APC on Friday, leaving Lawal, Bauchi’s Bala Mohammed, and Oyo’s Seyi Makinde as the only PDP governors .
However, Lawal had earlier vowed never to betray the PDP, stating in a recent interview: “I can’t betray my party just because we have internal issues within it” . He also alleged that Zamfara had been excluded from federal palliatives due to his opposition status .
The Zamfara APC has previously denied receiving any defection letter from the governor, with Publicity Secretary Yusuf Idris describing such claims as “malicious, unfounded, and mischievous” .
If Lawal eventually defects, the PDP would be left with only two governors, further strengthening the APC’s dominance ahead of the 2027 elections .
