JOS, PLATEAU STATE – Conflicting casualty figures have emerged following a Sunday attack on a community in Plateau State, with residents putting the death toll at 27 while police insist only 14 persons were killed.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday in a rural community in Bokkos Local Government Area, saw gunmen storm the village, setting houses ablaze and shooting sporadically. The assailants were reportedly dressed in military-style uniforms, according to eyewitnesses.
Community leaders, who conducted a search of the area, told journalists that 27 bodies had been recovered, including women and children. However, the Plateau State Police Command, in a statement, said its preliminary investigation confirmed 14 fatalities.
“We have deployed additional forces to the area to prevent further attacks and apprehend the perpetrators,” a police spokesperson said.
The state government has condemned the attack and promised to support the affected families. Meanwhile, humanitarian groups are mobilizing relief materials for displaced residents who have fled the community.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents plaguing Plateau State, where tensions between herders and farming communities have frequently escalated into deadly clashes.
