The Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, has banned undergraduate students from driving private vehicles on campus between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. following the death of a 21-year-old student, Eno Udoson.
The decision was announced in a statement signed by the Registrar, Dr. Idanyingi I. Daminabo, after the student was reportedly knocked down by a speeding vehicle on Wednesday.
Under the new directive, undergraduates who bring vehicles to campus must park them at the designated car park near the university’s main gate and use approved shuttle buses for movement within the campus.
The university also confirmed that two students linked to the fatal incident have been arrested and handed over to the police for investigation and possible prosecution.
In addition, RSU introduced stricter penalties for reckless driving, including suspension, disciplinary action, and vehicle impoundment. Hostel visiting hours have also been revised and will now end at 6:00 p.m. daily.
Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing, while the family of the deceased has called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
