The World Economic Forum has announced that Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, will not attend the Davos summit in Switzerland this week, citing the recent deadly crackdown on protesters in Iran.
In a statement released on Monday, the organizers said although Araghchi was invited last fall, “the tragic loss of lives of civilians in Iran over the past few weeks means that it is not right for the Iranian government to be represented at Davos this year.”
The decision follows widespread protests that erupted in Iran in late December over economic hardship, which were met with a severe government response under a communications blackout.
According to Norway-based Iran Human Rights, at least 3,428 protesters have been killed by security forces, though the true toll is believed to be higher.
The move reflects growing international pressure over Iran’s human rights record amid ongoing domestic unrest.
