The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned a 29-year-old suspect, Oshim Daniel, before an Enugu State Magistrate Court over the alleged theft of vehicle batteries and other valuables from residents of Alulu-Nike community.
According to CDA News Nigeria, the Police Command disclosed in a statement on Saturday that the suspect was remanded in a correctional custodial centre pending the hearing and determination of the case.
Police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said operatives attached to the Abakpa Police Division rescued the suspect from an angry mob on July 29 after he was allegedly caught stealing vehicle batteries and other valuables from residents a day earlier.
Investigations reportedly linked the suspect to the theft of three vehicle batteries valued at ₦150,000, ₦45,000 and ₦32,000. Officers also recovered a public address system, a Point-of-Sale (POS) device, a gas cylinder, a vehicle stereo, a spare tyre and other items suspected to have been stolen.
The police said the suspect allegedly confessed to the offences and was charged with three counts of stealing under the Criminal Code of Enugu State.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, commended the officers for rescuing the suspect from mob action and urged residents to hand suspects over to law enforcement agencies instead of resorting to jungle justice. He also advised vehicle owners to improve security by installing anti-theft devices and registering their vehicles with the Nigeria Police Electronic Central Motor Registry.
