AKURE, NIGERIA – Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested two suspected members of a car theft syndicate and recovered several stolen vehicles in a crackdown on vehicle-related crimes across the state.
The suspects were apprehended following intelligence-led operations by the command’s anti-crime unit, which had been tracking a network of car thieves operating in Akure and neighboring towns. Police spokesperson, SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed the arrests on Tuesday, stating that the stolen vehicles were recovered from various locations.
“The command is committed to ridding the state of criminal elements. These arrests are part of ongoing efforts to combat car theft and other related crimes,” Odunlami-Omisanya said.
The recovered vehicles, which include luxury and mid-range models, have been moved to the police station for safekeeping and would be released to their rightful owners after proper identification and verification.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the syndicate specialized in breaking into parked vehicles and using sophisticated tools to bypass security systems. The suspects are currently in custody and will face charges upon conclusion of investigations.
The police urged vehicle owners to take necessary security precautions, including the use of tracking devices and parking in well-lit, secure areas. Residents were also encouraged to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
