Police Arrests, Detains Officer Samson E over Viral N10,000 Extortion in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Samson E. , the officer caught on viral video extorting a motorist in the Idimu area of Lagos State. The arrest follows widespread public outrage after the video surfaced online on April 21, 2026 .

According to the victim, who recorded the incident, he was stopped by the officer while driving an ash-coloured vehicle. Despite possessing complete and valid documents, the officer insisted the car’s colour was “grey” and not “ash” as stated on the papers . The officer then allegedly threatened to arrest and detain the driver, demanding a bribe that was negotiated down to N10,000 after an initial demand of N30,000 .

The victim told newsmen: “I was stopped by a police officer opposite Area M Command… He charged me N30,000, which I told him I didn’t have. He insisted he would arrest me. I pleaded, and he said the least he could take was N10,000” . The officer then took the cash, counting the notes while seated inside the victim’s car, unaware he was being recorded .

Following the viral video, shared on X by user @epiccycl, the Area Commander, ACP Tokunbo Abaniwonda, reportedly ordered his immediate arrest . The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the detention in a statement, noting that disciplinary procedures have commenced, and a full investigation is ongoing with results to be made public .
