ILORIN – The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed that six individuals arrested by soldiers in Edo State last week are legitimate members of a state-backed vigilante group collaborating with security agencies to combat crime.
The clarification follows a viral video showing the arrest along the Auchi–Ikpeshi Road in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, which sparked allegations from opposition groups that the Kwara State government was supporting armed bandits.
In a statement on Tuesday, Police Public Relations Officer Toun Ejire-Adeyemi said the vigilantes were traveling in an official Ifelodun Local Government Area vehicle when they were detained by the Nigerian Army.
After being handed over to the Kwara Police Command for investigation and profiling, they were found to be lawfully engaged in community security efforts and were subsequently released.
“Following a thorough investigation, it was established that the individuals are legitimate members of a vigilante group operating in collaboration with recognised security agencies in the ongoing efforts to combat banditry,” the statement read.
Commissioner of Police CP Ojo Adekimi reaffirmed the command’s commitment to inter-agency synergy and lawful community policing.
