Police Shooting at Ada George, Port Harcourt Leaves One Dead, Three Injured
An unidentified police officer allegedly opened fire on a motorist who refused to stop, causing a crash that killed the driver and injured three bystanders.
Panic erupted around the Agip Junction, Ada George area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday evening after a yet-to-be-identified police officer allegedly shot a man dead and injured three others .
The incident reportedly occurred at about 5 pm after the deceased, who was driving a vehicle, allegedly failed to stop when he was flagged down by police officers stationed around the Agip by Ada George Junction . An eyewitness told journalists that one of the officers allegedly opened fire on the vehicle after the driver refused to stop .
According to the eyewitness, the bullet struck the driver in the chest after the officer fired three shots, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and ram into bystanders . “The police officer fired three bullets. The vehicle lost control and hit three other people,” the witness said . The driver died at a hospital close to the junction . The condition of the three injured persons remains unclear .
After the shooting, the officer reportedly began firing sporadically in an attempt to escape, prompting some youths to rush at him, collect his gun, and beat him. Other police officers later arrived and rescued him .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that when contacted for confirmation, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Agabe Blessing Karbolo, promised to revert but had not responded as of the time of filing this report . The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear pending an official statement from the Police Command .
