ABUJA/OYIGBO – A fierce war of words has broken out between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Ajibola Basiru, over the political situation in Rivers State.
Basiru, in a statement on Monday, accused Wike of meddling in APC affairs and making unsubstantiated allegations about party leaders receiving funds from Rivers’ coffers.
He challenged Wike to prove his claims or face legal action, adding that the minister should resign if he wants to fully engage in Rivers politics.
“My background, track record is that of unquestionable integrity, and I challenge him to prove his allegations, or we may meet in court,” Basiru stated.
He also criticized APC South-South Vice Chairman Victor Giadom for disrespecting Governor Siminalayi Fubara, insisting that the office of governor must be respected regardless of political differences.
Wike, responding during a thank-you visit to Oyigbo Local Government Area, warned Basiru to “leave Rivers State alone” and accused some APC members of benefiting from the state’s resources.
“Let me warn those who come to Rivers State… Leave Rivers State alone. Go and ask those who have done it before. Don’t take our support for Mr. President for granted,” Wike declared.
The public clash underscores deepening divisions within the ruling party in Rivers State and highlights Wike’s continued influence despite being a member of the opposition PDP.
