Rafah Crossing Reopens Under Tight Control

Rafah Crossing Reopens Under Tight Control

Israel partially reopened the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt on Sunday, February 1, 2026, allowing limited civilian movement for the first time since its closure in May 2024.

The reopening, coordinated with Egypt and the European Union, is currently in a pilot phase. Entry and exit are permitted only for individuals who receive prior Israeli security clearance.

The crossing is crucial for humanitarian access and civilian travel in and out of Gaza. About 200 patients and a group of Palestinian Authority officials were among those waiting to cross.

Israel had previously refused to reopen Rafah until the body of the last Israeli hostage held in Gaza was recovered—a condition met earlier last week.
